Trip #2 Cowboys, Indians, Princesses and Queens
Trip number 2... Seattle to Florida and back
Day 1 and 2; Seattle to
Las Vegas.
Day 1 and 2; Seattle to Redding, then to Vegas 1250 miles total.
The only really interesting place along the route from Redding to Vegas.
Tonopah, Nevada. Every Memorial Day the town celebrates Jim Butler, his wife Belle, and his stubborn donkey. As the story goes, Jim picked up a rock to throw at his stubborn donkey, but before he let go he took a second look at it. Luckily for Jim, as well as the donkey, rather than throw it he had it assayed, which proved its value. The rest, as they say, is history. Tonopah became the site of the second-richest silver strike in Nevada history. Here’s a site for more about the history of this fascinating area. http://www.tonopahnevada.com/about.html
Between Boulder City and Kingman, Arizona, on Highway 93, is the new Hoover Dam Bypass bridge. Before the completion of the bridge driver’s had to drive over the dam. Now, a beautiful 4 lane bridge spans the Colorado River just south of the dam. Driving across the bridge isn’t much, since the designers had the good sense to install concrete barriers to block the spectacular views, thus avoiding many hazardous slow vehicles or distracted motorists. To see the bridge, however, a parking lot and fairly easy climb to the bridge itself afford terrific views of both the Colorado canyon directly below the dam and of the dam itself. The trek to the bridge is truly worth it.
