Trip #2    Cowboys, Indians, Princesses and Queens

Beth, Ken, Gracie and Jack flew back to Seattle on Tuesday but Bailey couldn’t have his stitches removed

until Friday so Kathy and I had a couple of free days.  After our Disney adventure of the last two weeks

you would have thought we would have just wanted to sit around by the pool and have

some down time, but no, we’re not much for sitting.  Wednesday we drove over to the Atlantic to see St. Augustine, and Thursday we went back to Epcot to see the Flower and Garden Show.

About an hour east of Orlando you first see the Atlantic Ocean.  In our case, our first glimpse of the Atlantic was at Cocoa Beach.  We looked all around for Tony and Jeannie but never found them.  Imagine the boost for this website if I had got a photo of Jeannie’s navel!

St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States.  It was founded in 1565 and is today the headquarters for the Florida National Guard.  The fort at St. Augustine was named Fort Marion after Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox of the American Revolution.  Want another bit of trivia?  The daughter of Geronimo was born at Fort Marion and was originally named Marion.  Kind of makes this a pretty informative web-site, doesn’t it.

If you’re visiting Orlando for any longer period of time and you need a break from Mickey’s World or the rest of the local attractions, St. Augustine makes a nice one day side trip.  It’s only an hour and forty-five minutes away, unless, like we did, you want to head due East to the beach and then travel north up the coast through the various communities.  The coast route is pleasant and you can stop along the way in places like Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral and Daytona Beach.  St. Augustine itself has a great fort the kids would just love to try to tear down and a really nice shopping area centered around St. George Street, a pedestrian only brick street lined with historic homes, tourist shops and restaurants.
